Healthcare data took center stage at ISPOR 2025

It’s barely been one month since ISPOR 2025 and we are still amazed at the positive feedback we received. Our MarketScan® team is looking forward to taking everything we learned and using it to continue unlocking world-class, real-world data solutions.
The three-day event saw the global health economics and outcomes research (HEOR) community gather to present research, network, and learn from one another. MarketScan sponsored posters on everything from insulin adherence in diabetes to using linked claims and self-reported employee health risk assessment data.
One thing was certain though: it was truly all about the healthcare data and what organizations can – and should be – doing with it.
Linked claims data – seeing the complete patient picture
Being able to take your real-world data sources and ensure they can talk to one another is essential for helping to provide a more complete and clinically rich dataset. At ISPOR, we were able to connect with Veradigm, who we’ve collaborated with to create a linked dataset with Veradigm’s EHR data.
By combining clinical and claims information, this collaboration enables deeper insights into patient journeys, treatment outcomes, and overall care delivery. Linked claims data bridges the gap between what happens in the clinical setting and the financial or administrative side of healthcare, offering a holistic perspective on patient care. Specifically, organizations can:
- Conduct deeper and more precise health economics and outcomes research and epidemiology analyses.
- Support regulatory requirements including validation exercises.
- Gain insights from a dataset that spans millions of unique lives with longitudinal patient views.
Having the complete patient picture allows for more informed decisions, improved care coordination, and better outcomes for patients.
Using data to understand healthcare utilization patterns in a Medicaid population
One of the MarketScan sponsored poster sessions was on a study of whether alterations in healthcare accessibility changed healthcare utilization patterns in a Medicaid population. Brenna Brady, Helen Varker, and Liisa Palmer dove into this real-world example of how data can be used.
The findings revealed a significant shift in healthcare utilization, underlining the challenges faced by patients in accessing timely care. Specifically, regions experiencing physician shortages saw a decrease in outpatient visits, suggesting potential barriers such as extended wait times, increased travel distances, or limited provider options.
There is a critical need for collaborative efforts to address these shortages, ensuring equitable access to care for vulnerable populations. Healthcare organizations can gain valuable insights into these trends and work towards sustainable, patient-centered solutions.
The continued importance of Social Determinants of Health (SDoH)
Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) was another central topic at ISPOR. Factors such as socioeconomic status, education, environment, and access to nutritious food often determine the quality and longevity of life far beyond clinical care alone.
For example, MarketScan presented posters on The Impacts of Annual Wage on Insulin Adherence in Diabetes and on patterns of familial influenza vaccination.
Addressing SDoH is key to bridging gaps in health equity, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations. By leveraging innovative analytics and actionable insights, healthcare organizations can proactively identify barriers stemming from SDoH and implement targeted interventions that address root causes. This holistic approach is critical to building healthier communities while reducing costs and improving outcomes at both individual and systemic levels.
